Onomatopoeia

Defenition: A word that imitates the sound it represents.


Example: "Splat!"


Significance: Onomatopoeia's are important parts of poetry because they help let you understand what the object sounds like. Onomatopoeia's make poetry better because it gets you thinking more on things in poetry.



Personification

Defenition: Giving non human objects human characteristicts.

Example: 


Significance: Personification's are important parts of poetry because it gives animated objects feelings. Personification's make poetry better because it helps connect the reader to the object.


Imagery

Defenition: Words in a poem that help you feel like your in the poem and imagine what it is like using your five senses. (See, Taste, Touch, Smell, Hear)

Example: "The fresh popcorn out of the microwave."

Significance: Imagery is an important part of poetry because it helps you understand a poem by having an image in your head to understand the poem well. Imagery makes poetry better because it helps you imagine that your in the poem.

Simile

Defenition: A figure of speech in which two different things are compared usin like or as.

Example: "She is as short as a leprochaun."

Significance: Simile's are an important part of poetry because it makes it so people don't have to explain too much in poetry. Simile's make poetry better because it makes it fun to learn.

Repetition

Defenition: To repeat.


Example: In the poem if "If" when they say "If you can..." because it repeats it in every sentence.


Significance: Repetition in poetry is important because if the poet repeats the the title or word it gives it more meaning. Repetiton makes poetry better because it gives meaning to poems.



Tone

Defenition: Feelings and attitude towards something.


Example: "If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue," from the poem "If" because it shows how the man feels about growing up and becoming a man.




Significance: Tone's are important parts of poerty because it shows how someone feels in the poem, which helps to understand the poem better. Tone's make poetry better because it helps someone give their attitude in a poem that can be either sad or happy.

Interpretation

Defenition: Your explanation on something.


Example: "You'll be a man." The line can be interpeted as a man talking to his son.



Significance: Interpretation's are an important part of poetry because it makes the poetry unique to a person. Interpretation's make poetry better because eveyone has their own thinking on the poetry.

Extended Metaphor

Defenition: A metaphor introduced and then developed throughout all part of the literary work.

Example:
"My Life is Basketball
My eyes are big before the game starts
My body covered in hope
18 years of practice
My mind is focussed
I have only one purpose
I visualize everything I want to do
My home the court
The crowd surrounding with their big eyes watching
Attracted to the bright lights
My team behind me
Weaving in and out of expectant fans
Making our way to the court
Endless cameras
Each other's families
Still sensing the sudden thrill of anticipation
We circle up, hands together, chanting
A team together
All focussed on glory
Where we will Live forever"
Significance: Extended Metaphor's are an important part of poetry because they make it so you can write as much as you want about metaphors. Extended Metaphor's make poetry better because they help ewxplain a lot about you in a cool and fun way.

Metaphor

Defenition: A figure of speech in which a phrase or term is said said that is isn't literally.

Example: "A mighty fortress is our God."


Significance: Metaphor's are an important part of poetry because it helps people get to the point of what their saying. Metaphor's make poetry better because it is fun to use metaphor's, which helps you learn.

Defenition: A couplet is a pair of lines that can or cannot ryhme and are the same length.

Stanza


Defenition: A stanza is an arrangment a certain lines that is usually for or more and is made into a poem.
